IRISH AT GETTYSBURG – MARCH
An Inns of the Gettysburg Area Event
General Hancock will lead us on a battlefield walk following the path of the Irish Brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg at 1 PM. Join us for dinner at the Dobbin House at 6:30 PM followed by a presentation by the General and associates. Entree choices: Salmon, Hunter-style Chicken or Prime Rib. $55 for adults; $40 for children ages 10 and under. LINCOLN COMES TO TOWN – APRIL
An Inns of the Gettysburg Area Event
Meet at the National Cemetery at 1 PM for a walk with a Licensed Battlefield Guide as he tells the story of how the cemetery came to be and the visit paid by President Lincoln on November 19, 1863 when he delivered one of the most famous speeches in American history. At 6:30 pm we will meet at the Dobbin House for dinner with the President (Lincoln) himself, followed by reminiscences from the President. ONE HUNDRED NIGHTS OF TAPS
The notes of Taps will fill the air in Gettysburg every evening this summer as the famous 24-note call is sounded in honor of those who have served our nation. The Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania, in partnership with Gettysburg National Military Park and Taps for Veterans, invite the public to attend One Hundred Nights of Taps between Memorial Day and Labor Day at the Soldiers’ National Monument in the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

RE-ENACTMENT OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG- JULY
Let the history books come alive with the re-enactment of the Battle of Gettysburg. You can see battle reenactments, field demonstrations, a large living history village, living history activity tents, guest speakers, and an extensive Sutler area. Thousands of re-enactors from across the nation and around the world will be staging the battle reenactments for this very special reenactment.

GETTYSBURG BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL – AUGUST
The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival is an internationally-acclaimed multi-day music festival held every May and August at Granite Hill Camping Resort. CHAMBERLAIN AT GETTYSBURG – NOVEMBER
Sponsored by the Inns of the Gettysburg Area, spend the weekend getting to know Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine, who saved the left flank of the Union line during the battle of Gettysburg with his famous bayonet charge.

DEDICATION DAY – NOVEMBER

Remembrance Day is an annual event held in conjunction with the Gettysburg Address anniversary. A parade of Civil War living history groups begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at the National Park.

The Gettysburg Seminary Ridge Museum opened July 1, 2013 – 150 years to the day after the Battle of Gettysburg began– and features 20,000 square feet of interactive exhibit galleries and educational programming to interpret three major areas of emphasis—none of which are the focus of any other museum in Gettysburg:

  1. The pivotal first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on Seminary Ridge
  2. The care of the wounded and human suffering within Schmucker Hall during its use as a Civil War field hospital

GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK VISITOR CENTER

There are as many ways to explore the battlefield as there are interests of the visitors who come to the Visitor Center. The battlefield can be visited by car, bus, or a guided tour, the National Park Service self-guided walking tours, join the crowd of a park ranger led tour, or enjoy touring the 40 miles of battlefield roads by bicycle or galloping across the 5,700 acres of field by horseback.

GETTYSBURG BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM

As early as the late 1700’s Africans were brought to Gettysburg as slave labor. In the course of time others would arrive as free men. It is not widely known that while much of the nation lay in the grip of slavery, approximately 180 African Americans living a mere ten miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line lived as free men and women in Gettysburg. Find out more about their story at the Gettysburg Black History Museum.

RE-ENACTMENT INFORMATION

A yearly tradition, this year join us for the Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment, the single largest and one of the most pivotal military engagements ever fought on American soil. The event takes place in July and coincides with the Battle of Gettysburg. This is an all-day, family event where dusty old history books will come alive

JENNIE WADE HOUSE MUSEUM

Mary Virginia Wade, better known as Jennie Wade, was the only civilian killed during the American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863 while baking bread for Union soldiers. The house of Jennie Wade is displayed with some original items and is one of three of the same type of house in Gettysburg

LINCOLN TRAIN MUSEUM

This museum highlights President Lincoln’s visit to Gettysburg from Washington D.C. and features over 1,000 model trains from many countries, dioramas and more.

SHRIVER HOUSE

Meticulously restored to its 1860s appearance, visitors today are able to visualize what life was like back in mid-1800, south-central Pennsylvania and gain a better understanding of how the battle affected the 2400 citizens who called Gettysburg “home.” The home of George and Hettie Shriver tells the story of what life was like for everyday citizens of our historic town during a time of great conflict and unrest.

WILLS HOUSE

In July 1863, the American Civil War came to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Four months later, President Abraham Lincoln followed to honor the fallen. The Wills House is where he stayed during that historic visit. The museum illustrates life with the Wills family as the Battle of Gettysburg threatened their home and how a simple invitation from David Wills resulted in the most famous speech in American history—the Gettysburg Address.

LINKS AT GETTYSBURG

The golf at the Links at Gettysburg is truly spectacular, with water on almost every hole, elevated tee shots to greens fronting red rock cliffs; blind doglegs and undulating greens making the putting difficult even after you’ve managed to escape the hazards. Striving to shoot par at The Links is a supreme challenge and a rewarding experience every golfer should have.

CEDAR RIDGE GOLF COURSE

The 18-hole “Cedar Ridge’” course at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course facility in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania features 6,132 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 68.9 and it has a slope rating of 119. Designed by Weaver Family, the Cedar Ridge golf course opened in 1987.

HORSEBACK RIDING

NATIONAL RIDING STABLES

Ride into history on a horseback tour of the Gettysburg National Military Park. The National Riding Stable offers two-hour guided tours describing the three-day battle history along the trails of the Park. Also available are one-hour tours to the second and third day battle locations as well as a private tour with licensed guide option.

HICKORY HOLLOW FARM

From March through November, Hickory Hollow Farm offers family-run horseback and trail rides through the Gettysburg Battlefield. Tours include a licensed battlefield guide who will ride along and describe the battle as well as answer questions.

HIKING: NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS

MICHAUX STATE FOREST

Great hiking awaits you at Michaux State Forest. The park encompasses more than 85,000 acres in the South Mountain area of Cumberland, Franklin and Adams counties. Considered Pennsylvania’s “cradle of forestry,” Michaux is the site of first forestry school, Mont Alto.

APPALACHIAN TRAIL

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a 2,174-mile footpath along the ridgecrests and across the major valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in northern Georgia.

CALEDONIA STATE PARK

Located in both Adams and Franklin counties, midway between Chambersburg and Gettysburg on US 30. Caledonia is in the northernmost section of the Blue Ridge Mountains known locally as South Mountain.

STRAWBERRY HILL NATURE PRESERVE

Located in south-central Pennsylvania (Adams County), Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve and Environmental Center is a non-profit education and conservation organization located on 609 acres in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The 609-acre preserve contains diverse habitats, including wet and dry woodlands, three ponds, two mountain streams, and much more. Ten miles of trails meander through the property and lead to unique rock formations, scenic vistas, and secret glades.

Hikers, walkers, families, school children, teachers, photographers, birders, butterfly-chasers, and nature lovers are always welcome.

MONT ALTO STATE PARK

Local mountain roads offer interesting short hikes and a flora that attracts a diversity of wildlife, especially woodland birds. Mont Alto State Park can be reached from Caledonia State Park.

At the Battle of Antietam, 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after only twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
